Compass Arts Imagination PlayhouseImagination Playhouse I: Folk Theater Ensemble for K-2nd
    Taught by Gina Samardge
    Thursdays, 4:15pm-5:15pm, January 31 to May 23
Required Tech Rehearsals and Performances May 13-19

A wonderful introduction to the world of theater, Imagination Playhouse I nurtures the vast, creative minds of children. Through the use of improvisation and theater games, creative play, singing, instruments, art, design, and movement, students will help to bring an original story written by Imagination Playhouse II to life. In the spirit of the oral tradition of storytelling, each child has the opportunity to help make the story their own: creating their own character within the story; designing and making parts of their costumes, set pieces, and props; helping to write some of the music and lyrics; and creating dances. The final production is a unique theatrical experience, with students not only acting, singing and dancing, but playing percussion instruments as well. A truly one-of-a-kind production of which each child can be proud.

Sing & Move Jamboree Compass ArtsSing and Move Jamboree! for little ones 6 months-5 years and a caregiver
    Taught by Jessie Shaffer
Tuesdays, 10am-10:45am, March 26 to May 28 (no class 4/16)
Make-up classes on June 4 and June 11

Sing and Move Jamboree is a singalong-style class that will get your child moving! Welcoming children ages 0-5, this 45-minute class combines classic children’s songs and yoga-inspired movement with the exploration of rhythm and melody through props and small instruments. This class also exposes your child to the banjo and violin through fun, American folk tunes tailored for children.

Jessie Shaffer officially got her start in music playing classical violin as a child, but way before that she was singing and picking out melodies by ear with her mom at home. She used to spend hours alone, listening to her Fisher-Price record player, while her mom got SO MUCH DONE around the house. Now as a mom herself, Jessie is constantly delighting in the joy of sharing music with her daughter, and with the children of other parents. She has also practiced yoga for the past two decades and earned a master’s degree in art history from Brooklyn College that allows her to teach college students in addition to toddlers. Over the years, Jessie has honed her improvisation and songwriting skills, and recently picked up the banjo as her main instrument for singalongs. Since 2015, Jessie has co-led singalongs and taught music classes with the Brooklyn based children’s music group, The Sparrow Sisters. A recent transplant to Beacon, Jessie has been blown away its ultra-creative and welcoming community, as she finds her path here.

Cartooning Comics Ed MurrCartooning for 3rd-6th grade
    Taught by Ed Murr
    Thursdays, 5pm-6:15pm, April 4 to June 13

For both returning and new students! Explore the fundamental process of character creation using shape construction to develop the form of the character, while considering the personality of the character and how it informs the shape. Students will turn these characters into a cartoon drawing with a world created entirely by them.  A full character has a world in which they live and students will explore perspective as a tool to build their character's individual world. From there they will introduce these characters into a story of their own creation as they explore the language of comics and sequential storytelling. Perfect for kids interested in comics, cartooning, animation and storytelling!! All supplies included.

If you have questions about the class curriculum, please contact Ed directly at ed@edmurr.com.
